Galactic Alignment may cause next extinction period.

This article was found in the Science Daily and gives us a glimps of what could be a possible scenario when the galactic aligment takes place on December 21, 2012.

ScienceDaily (May 2, 2008) — The sun’s movement through the Milky Way regularly sends comets hurtling into the inner solar system — coinciding with mass life extinctions on earth, a new study claims. The study suggests  a link between comet bombadment and the movement through the galaxy.

Scientists at the Cardiff Centre for Astrobiology built a computer model of our solar system’s movement and found that it “bounces” up and down through the plane of the galaxy. As we pass through the densest part of the plane, gravitational forces from the surrounding giant gas and dust clouds dislodge comets from their paths. The comets plunge into the solar system, some of them colliding with the earth.

The Cardiff team found that we pass through the galactic plane every 35 to 40 million years, increasing the chances of a comet collision tenfold. Evidence from craters on Earth also suggests we suffer more collisions approximately 36 million years. Professor William Napier, of the Cardiff Centre for Astrobiology, said: “It’s a beautiful match between what we see on the ground and what is expected from the galactic record.”

The periods of comet bombardment also coincide with mass extinctions, such as that of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Our present position in the galaxy suggests we are now very close to another such period.

While the “bounce” effect may have been bad news for dinosaurs, it may also have helped life to spread. The scientists suggest the impact may have thrown debris containing micro-organisms out into space and across the universe.

Centre director Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe said: “This is a seminal paper which places the comet-life interaction on a firm basis, and shows a mechanism by which life can be dispersed on a galactic scale.”

The paper, by Professor Napier and Dr Janaki Wickramasinghe, is to be published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/05/080502092145.htm

  1. The science article you quote is interesting. However nothing in it suggests a date or moment for the passing of the galactic plane.

So far as I can tell from astronomers, the exact width of the galaxy is very difficult to tell and as such the center line is impossible to identify.

Since this center line or galactic plane is not exactly identifiable, then setting a date for the crossing of the plane simply can’t happen. In fact the best accuracy that can be hoped for from the knowledge we currently have is about 1 million years either side.

So we could have already passed through the galactic plane several thousand years ago, or it might happen in a few hundred thousand years from now.

Either way; December 21, 2012 can not possibly be identified as the date it happens.

    • I agree with your statement; nonetheless, the advance civilization of the Mayans, ending their calendar 2012 should not be readily dismissed. The science article I pointed out only confirms that we are on the road. The bible tells us what will happen when we get there. The ruling elite cry global warming so we won’t know that it’s coming. Don’t let anyone keep you blinded.

  2. The Mayans had several calendars, only one of which can be identified as ending in December 2012 and maybe not even the 12th, see this link http://www.webexhibits.org/calendars/calendar-mayan.html.

So the date of December 12th, 2012 based on the Mayan calendar requires adoption of the specific values that result in the date required and the ignoring of any other values that result in a different date. As such the Mayan calendar can not be taken to be a reliable indication of this date because it is not certain.

So yes, the Mayan calendar can redily be dismissed.

What about the Egyption Calendar? or the Greek Calendar? Or any other calendar from any other ancient civilisation? The Mayans no longer exist, their knowledge of our future is no better than our own. They had no special future knowledge.

It is also worth noting that the science article is slightly speculatory and that the increased risk of comet impact is not directly due to the pasing through the plane, but that the undulating cycle of our solar system takes us through an area which caries greater comet risk as well as through the galactic plane. Both happen as a result of our solar systems undulating cycle through the Milky Way. Passing through the galactic plane does not in and of itself bring about greater comet risk.

So, no the article does not confirm anything for 2012 and I highly doubt the bible does as well.
